Easy Dot Day Art Activity Idea for Kids
International Dot Day is celebrated on September 15th and is a day to celebrate creativity and the idea that we are ALL artists in our own unique way! A super easy activity you can do with your students at school or children at home is to start with a dot and see what creative art project or drawing they can make from a single dot of inspiration.
Getting Started
This activity requires almost no prep at all! We gathered the following items and let our little artists create away:
- The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds
- paper
- dot markers
- additional art supplies: paint, crayons, pencils
- optional: table cover
First, protect the table with a plastic table cover so that kids can get messy and clean up will be a breeze! We always stock up on these at our local dollar store. Then, we set out paper, dot markers and any additional art supplies we happen to have on hand.
The Dot Art Activity
Start by reading The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds to your students. Using dot markers (or regular markers if you don’t have dot markers), have each child make a dot with the color of their choice anywhere on their paper. Ask them to imagine what they could make out of that dot and have them draw a full picture. It’s absolutely amazing to see what they come up with! What we love most is how children of different ages can work on this activity. They can all get into it no matter how young or old!
Our 3rd grader recently learned about the story of Captain Sully and the “Miracle on the Hudson”. He’s obsessed with planes and that inspired his dot to turn into the scene of the plane landing on the Hudson River. He is in awe of how Captain Sully landed that plane in the water with such a happy ending.
Our Kindergartner took a red dot and turned it into a fire scene complete with a fire truck and even a zip line adventure!
The kids kept asking for more and more paper so they could create new projects with different colored dots. Just like in the book, they signed each masterpiece and it was ready to display on the wall. This made them so proud!
We hope your artists enjoy this activity as much as ours did and that it inspires them to let their imagination run wild. Happy Dot Day!
