FREE Alphabet Tracing Activities

Introducing alphabet letters has never been easier! We’ve designed these free alphabet tracing activities for your little learners who are ready to start practicing their letters. At the same time, they will identify picture words that correspond with each one. These 26 pages each show how to correctly write the upper and lower case alphabet letter. In addition, they give kiddos a chance to trace three fun pictures that begin with the letter they are working on. An activity like this is great for helping to develop fine motor skills!

Alphabet Tracing: Letter Formation

One of the simplest and easiest ways to work on letter formation is with tracing. Letter formation is the ability to form the letters of the alphabet correctly. It is an important skill in learning to write properly and neatly. That is why each letter is featured using large font with lines to guide them through writing each one. We have included both upper and lower case letters. While it may be easier for kids to form uppercase letters, we are not a fan of focusing solely on uppercase letters at the beginning of letter formation instruction. In the real world, most print is in lowercase. Asking kids to write everything in uppercase and then switching to the correct way is confusing to kids. Therefore, they will focus on both upper and lower case while using their fine motor skills to trace the letters and pictures!

Alphabet Tracing: Pictures

We’ve seen many printables that show pictures that begin with a specific letter of the alphabet. But, we wanted to take things a step further and have students actually take part in making the images that go with each letter. So, we incorporated beginning art skills by having the child trace and color the pictures and it has been a hit with our little learners! They not only start to develop confidence with drawing but also love to add color and details to each picture to make them unique. The students really develop a sense of pride in their work and we’ve noticed they are more likely to try drawing animals and objects on their own after using these pages!

Ways to use the tracing pages:

There are so many ways to use these tracing pages but here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Gather supplies such as pencils, crayons, and/or markers. We love these pencils for emerging writers who are still working on their fine motor skills: Ticonderoga My First Tri-Write Wood-Cased Pencils
  • Introduce one letter at a time and do the first few pages together as a class. That way, the child gets comfortable with using the printables.
  • Encourage them to use their finger first to trace the letters and pictures. Then, they will use their pencils and crayons to trace and color.
  • Send completed pages home, or put them into a special finished work folder.
  • Display work in the classroom to show what letters they’ve worked on.
  • Cut the printable pages into little mini books for each letter. Children love to flip through the books and admire their artwork!
