FREE Spring Center-Syllable Sorting Activity

We feel that teaching syllables is often overlooked but oh so important when developing fluent readers. The act of dividing words into smaller chunks is important because it helps to speed the process of decoding words quickly and fluently. Understanding syllables also helps your students learn to spell words with better accuracy. To give students additional exposure and practice with syllables, we created this fun and interactive Spring center. Children will sort different spring words by one, two, and three syllables!

Lately, we see many signs that springtime is quickly approaching! The weather is warmer, flowers are blooming, and local stores are filled with displays of chocolate bunnies and colorful eggs. So the next time you find yourself eyeing those fun spring items, grab some plastic eggs and baskets to set up this fun literacy center for your students to explore!

Getting Started

Here is a list of what you will need to set up this center in your classroom or homeschool learning environment:

  • 18 plastic eggs
  • scissors
  • jellybean words & jar templates
  • recording sheet
  • basket to store the eggs
  • optional: laminator

Our favorite place to buy plastic eggs and baskets is the local dollar store because they are inexpensive and are usually packed with every color scheme you could imagine. From bright colors to light pastels, you can easily find the best spring decor without spending a lot of money!

Prepping this center is so easy! First, print and cut out the jellybean words and jar templates. You may want to laminate these pieces for extra durability so that they can be re-used time and time again. Now put the jellybean words inside of each egg and place all the eggs in the basket. Finally, print and copy the recording sheet. Place all these items in your literacy center and you’re ready to go!

Spring Center Student Activity

Students will grab an egg from the basket, open it up and read the word. Pictures are included in the jelly beans to help students decode the word if needed. They will match each spring themed word to the correct number of syllables by placing the word in one of the three jelly bean jars! Once all the eggs have been opened and sorted, students can write down their answers on the provided recording sheet.

Go on an Egg Hunt!

Extend the learning by going on an egg hunt! Since you already have the plastic eggs with words inside, hide them around your classroom and have the students search high and low, trying to find all the eggs. If they succeed, have a special treat or reward waiting for them. This can be a sweet treat, extra computer time, or take advantage of the nice weather and schedule some additional outdoor playtime! But, before they get their reward, open each egg as a class and see if they can correctly read each wordโ€ฆ bonus points if they tell you how many syllables the word contains! We love this because it helps reinforce the center activity and provides extra practice in a whole group setting.
