Alphabet & Numbers Practice Workbooks

As parents and teachers, one of the most exciting milestones we can celebrate in early childhood is when a little one begins to recognize their letters and numbers. These early skills lay the foundation for all future learning, from reading and writing to basic math. The good news? Teaching these skills doesn’t have to feel like a chore—it can be fun and engaging for both you and the child! We have created two alphabet & numbers practice workbooks that will help little learners with these fundamental skills. Let’s explore why learning letters and numbers is so important and take a closer look into these workbook activities that make the process even more enjoyable.

Why Learning Letters and Numbers Matters

First things first—why should we focus on teaching letters and numbers early on? Well, early childhood is a critical period for brain development, and the skills children acquire during these years can have a lasting impact on their future learning. Here’s why mastering letters and numbers is essential:

  1. Language Development: Recognizing letters and understanding their sounds is the first step toward reading. As children learn to identify letters, they begin to understand how words are built and how language works.
  2. Cognitive Skills: Learning numbers helps with problem-solving, logical thinking, and even basic math skills. Recognizing and understanding numbers early on makes future math learning easier and less intimidating.
  3. Confidence and Independence: When children can identify letters and numbers, they feel more confident in their ability to communicate and solve problems, leading to a greater sense of independence in their learning.

Alphabet A-Z Practice Workbook

The first thing you will notice about our alphabet & numbers practice workbooks is the simple, easy to follow format. For each letter, there are 3 activities that repeat so that the child can complete the pages independently. For example, with the letter “B”, they would start by tracing the letter and then finding (or identifying) the upper and lowercase “B”. You will notice that the tracing letters are large and have directional help using stars and arrows.

The second activity page for each letter is all about writing “B” by tracing and then trying to write the letter independently. Giving the child plenty of space and opportunity to write the letters themselves is the great way to ensure that they are writing each letter correctly. At this point, it is a good idea to check their work and help with any difficulty they may be having. For the last activity (and usually a child’s most favorite one!) they trace and color a corresponding picture that starts with each letter. The picture also comes alongside a simple sentence that they can trace too! Exposing them to simple sentence structure is crucial for their beginning literacy and reading skills.

At the end of the workbook, and after all activities have been completed, there are two missing letters assessment pages. We have included both the upper and lowercase versions. These pages will allow you to see just how much progress your little learner has made!

Numbers 0-20 Practice Workbook

Now, let’s look at the activities included in the numbers 0-20 practice workbook. This time, we are going to use the number 5 and 14 as an example. The first activity has the child tracing a very large number and number word. Then, they have some space to practice tracing the number several times. For the second activity, they practice writing the number independently. This is a good time to check on how the child is writing the number and help correct any formatting mistakes you may see. On the grid below that, they have the chance to find (or identify) the number they are working on.

The final activity for each number 1-10 has the child color, count and draw objects that represent that number. But, for numbers 11-20 the final activity looks a little different. Notice that they color the jar with the correct amount of pom-poms for the larger numbers. Finally, this workbook also includes assessment pages at the very end. Three missing numbers pages can be completed, and these pages will show the child’s understanding of not only writing numbers but also knowing the correct number order.
